In 2011, a group of “earthly angels” and I helped my best friend Audrey, a mother of 2 littles, in her final days of life. To orchestrate the daily tasks for her and keep track of her total care, we created a journal – taking an off-the-shelf binder and filling it with hand-rendered pages to organize the mountains of detailed information. Having a record made it easy for the next person to pick up the journal and know what was to be done. It gave her home care medical professionals a documented way to track her progress. Eventually, my Aunt Kathy required home hospice services. Subsequently my grandparents, Joe and Phyllis, who were well into their 90s, passed away within six months of each other. For months our family rallied around them so they could stay in their home until the decision was made to move to a more supported setting. In each of these life events, a journal was indispensable.

If you are reading this, it’s because you are either on your own journey of managing your health or are serving another human. There is a “heart to heart” connection and reciprocation you’ll find while giving of your talents during this sacred time. While caregiving for my best friend, she showed us her “heart” – her bravery, love of God, love of family, and even incredible acts of service although weak from her disease. Having a “servant heart” means you have the mindset or desire to selflessly and sacrificially serve others, regardless of your feelings towards them, or what it may cost you.
